“Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
- Matthew 19: 23, 24
It almost seems that Jesus is saying that those who are rich will not go to heaven. He says that it is difficult and it would easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle. This is not a sewing needle as some may suppose but the huge gates in the walls of Jerusalem which had smaller gates set within them.
When going through the small gate it would not be necessary to open the larger one. This small gate was known as the eye of the needle and for a camel to go through this gate would require that the animal be unloaded and kneeling in order to pass through the gate.
Jesus was not saying that it was impossible for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God but it is difficult. If you love your riches it becomes a burden to you. Make sure, like the camel, the load is lifted from you so that you can pass into the kingdom of God. This is not a matter of going to heaven but entering the kingdom of God, which consists of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Does money control you today or do you control money? Is it your master or do you master money.
God desires that you prosper for he gives the power to get wealth but we must never let it have mastery over us and we end up worshipping mammon. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things will be added to you.
Dear heavenly Father thank You for helping me to keep money in its rightful place in my heart and to give as You direct me for the extension of your Kingdom. If riches increase by Your help I will not set my heart upon it.
