How do I give?

“Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”

- Mark 12:43-44

Jesus sat near the treasury watching as people gave money offerings. He obviously saw what they gave, because He knew how much a poor widow gave. The important thing is not what people give, although, it is observed by the Lord how much people did contribute to the offering.

The attitude in your giving is carefully noted by the Lord Jesus. Do you give for the extension of the Kingdom of God, grudgingly, without love, or just as a matter of duty and that it is an obligation which you meet in order to avoid feeling guilty when others give into the offering?

That poor widow’s sacrificial giving has been recorded in the Bible and thousands of sermons have been preached about her and her attitude. She loved God and she wanted to express it in the best way she knew how and that was given out of her lack.

She gave it freely and I’m sure with a smile on her face. She gave more than everyone else in Jesus’ estimation. Those two insignificant coins were like sparkling diamonds in Jesus sight.

This woman believed that God would not fail her so she gave everything - the two coins represented all she had to live on. She gave spontaneously and in faith and it was for this reason that Jesus praised her.

She knew, no doubt, Psalm 68:5, “God is a Father of the fatherless and a defender of the widows”.

Dear Father in heaven, thank You for Your daily provision of Your great love.  Thank You for opportunities to give financially to the kingdom of God. Help me never to turn a blind eye to the poor.
