“And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched…” - Mark 9:45
Again these words of Jesus seem drastic if taken literally. Imagine amputating your foot if it was responsible for you sinning. However, this cannot be taken literally of that I am sure; it is not what Jesus meant. But Jesus is emphasizing how destructive sin is and that it must not be entertained, but dealt with.
The temptation to go in the wrong direction is real. Your feet can take you into places of sin, or, into situations, that will result in failing God.
Determine that you will not go into any place or situation where you will compromise yourself. If once you were a big partygoer, don’t go to nightclubs. Stop! ‘Cut it off’, do not go inside and get tempted into old sins. Just remember the radical “surgery” that Jesus suggests for feet that run to sin.
Allow your steps to be ordered of the Lord. Your feet should be shod with the preparation of the gospel and instead of drifting into places of sin; you should be out on missions of mercy to save the lost.
Your feet should take you on missions to declare the word of God. To persist in going in the wrong direction and choosing a path of disobedience to God with feet swift to sin, will result in being cast into hell, into fire that shall never be quenched.
Some may argue that the wicked will be totally annihilated, which is not true, or that a God of love will never allow people to be in hell forever.
I would rather take Jesus at His word and be safe and secure. Our daily living must come under the sanctifying and transforming operation of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and lives.
Dear heavenly Father, I trust You today to direct my path and help me in my walk to be faithful and true to You.
