“… and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” - Mark 10:21
Jesus gave His life for us. A sacrifice that would be once and for all. It could never be taken away and it can never be added to. It is the perfect and most sublime sacrifice that the world will ever know.
In today’s verse Jesus talks about giving our all for the sake of His kingdom. Paul, the apostle, put it another way when he said, “I am crucified with Christ,” meaning that he had laid down his will and his personal agenda.
There is a story of a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her six-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to fight the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked him if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.
The little boy hesitated for a moment then said, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled as the colour began returning to Liz’s cheeks. Then the little boy grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice “Will I start to die right away?"
Of course, he didn’t die, but it is a touching story of self-sacrifice and a challenge to us to be willing and ready to meet the challenge of surrendering to God’s perfect will and making whatever sacrifices Jesus asks of us.
Dear Father God I put all my trust in You today. Help me to die to myself so that Your Plans and Purpose may be fulfilled in my life.
