The Shepherds and the Sheep

“All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” - Matthew 26:31-32

The disciples found it extremely difficult to understand that Jesus was going to be put to death. Their hearts were full of unbelief. They were hoping He would be the one to save Israel and somehow overthrow the Romans who occupied their land.

Jesus, who is the Great Shepherd, says He will be struck down and that the disciples would stumble because of this. They obviously did not understand that He was referring to them. They didn’t consider Jesus dying or them running away in fear.

The devil targets those who shepherd as Christian leaders and are concerned for the welfare and safety of God’s sheep. The devil knows that if he can remove the pastor or leader in a church he has effectively achieved his purpose.

He knows that if the leader is attacked the sheep will scatter. You need to remember the pastors before God continuously that they may be safeguarded and kept from being destroyed by the devil.  Jesus said, after He was raised, He would go before them into Galilee. He was saying you need not despair for I will rise from the dead.

Do not allow yourself to stumble and fail whatever the circumstances of your life. The Shepherd and Keeper of your soul has defeated the devil through His death and resurrection. He has gone ahead of us to prepare the way, but also walks with us daily as our Guide.

Dear Father, in the name of the Lord Jesus, I thank You for the assurance of eternal life and that we shall meet at an appointed place and time. Until then help me to serve You to the best of my ability.
