“Then if any one says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” - Matt. 24:23
Through the centuries there have been those who claim to be anointed by God, like Christ, the anointed one. They draw attention to themselves by the fact of so-called signs and wonders they perform. Jesus warned us to be very careful not to be deceived. These deceptions, says Jesus, are so strong that the “very elect” will be deceived.
Therefore we should beware. We are not to follow signs and wonders, they are to point the way, and are not an end in themselves.
There will be those who will say to the Lord, “We performed miracles in your name”, “we cast out devils in your name” and Jesus will say, “I never knew you”. How startling is that reply?
But you can easily discern between the false and the true. Those who are true will always direct you to the Lord Jesus Christ and make sure that He receives all the honour, praise and glory. False teachers/prophets will draw attention to themselves. They will be the focus of all attention.
The false prophet will demonstrate character flaws of self-praise and pride but true prophets will be humble and demonstrate the love of God. They will avoid self grandiosement.
Our total reliance on Him will help us to fulfil the royal law of love and to live a life of humility and dependence upon Him Jesus. He said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am meek and lowly of heart”. Meekness is not weakness but demonstrates strength of character.
Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that I will study your word and live it out in my life. Keep me from pride and help me not to be deceived by false teachings or false prophets, in Jesus name.
