“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.” - Matthew 23:13
Jesus today speaks out against those who pretend to possess understanding of the kingdom of heaven. Hypocrites carried a key that was a symbol or emblem of knowledge. There was a certain Rabbi by the name of Samuel. The title, when he died, his key and his tablets were hung on his tomb, because he died childless.
Those who pretend to understand the kingdom of heaven, the gospel of Christ, but have not received it themselves hinder and are a stumbling block to ordinary people from receiving it. These kinds of people confuse many who are misled and fail to accept the simplicity of the Good News.
The question today is: Am I living a life of pretence; am I just pretending to be a follower of Jesus Christ? Am I just showing off my knowledge of the Bible, but have not experienced its changing power in my life? Am I sure of my personal relationship with God?
My life as a follower of the Lord Jesus should exemplify him so that others should come to fully understand the gospel of the kingdom of heaven and enter into fellowship with Him.
We need to have a clear understanding of the kingdom of God and assist others to enter and not close the door to them by a poor example of true Christianity. The danger is real and Jesus warns against closing the door to those seeking to enter the kingdom of God by a lifestyle of hypocrisy.
Dear heavenly Father I thank You today for Your grace, Your mercy and love. Help me today to portray a true picture of the Lord Jesus wherever I am that others may see a true reflection of You. I sincerely desire others to come to a full understanding of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
