“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
- Matthew 23:27, 28
When you go to Israel, and especially Jerusalem, where Jesus was when He spoke these words, you cannot but notice the many tombs. Grave stones marking the tombs of thousands of people fill the hill sides and valley between the Mount of Olives and the temple mount. The grave markers, indeed, appear beautiful on the outside but there is nothing pretty or appealing under the ground.
Jesus is very forthright in His statement to the Pharisees in telling them that they appear righteous, appear beautiful and impressive outwardly but within there is sinfulness and uncleanness.
The heart and its motives and contents are clearly read by God, there is absolutely nothing that can be hidden from Him. He knows and sees everything. Yet people so often try to hide the dark side of their lives.
Today, know the truth about yourself; are there some things that are being justified? Do you cover up your shortcomings and make excuses for your behavior? Maybe you are living in total denial.
Take a little time today to examine your heart and see what may be hindering the flow and life of the Holy Spirit through you to a world in desperate need of the Lord Jesus.
Dear Father in heaven hallowed be Your name. You have created all things by Your word and by Your word You hold all things together. Cleanse me of all impurity of all wrong motives and may my actions, my words and my life truly be a portrayal of You, in the name of the Lord Jesus.
