“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. Now when he had agreed with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.”
- Matthew 20:1-2
Jesus is telling us that he is the owner of a vineyard who seeks labourers to work for him.
The vineyard is the world and he agrees with the workers with regard to their rewards at the end of the day. Some started working at the beginning of the day. Later some more workers came along and went into the fields and still others joined the workforce at the eleventh hour.
At the end of the day those who started work early in the morning received as much as those who worked only one hour which caused some consternation among the labourers
What Jesus is saying is that He will reward as He deems fit. When He returns his rewards shall be just and fair.
Some that we thought would be first will be last and those we thought would be last will be first. Today we need to appreciate the sacrifice, commitment and work of those first workers in the vineyard of the Lord.
Dear God and Father thank You for your love, grace and Your word that You have given us, but above all thank You for salvation that You have provided for us through the Lord Jesus and the privilege to be co-workers with You.
