You Can’t Buy It

“‘You shall not murder.’ ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ‘You shall not steal.’ ‘You shall not bear false witness.’ ‘Honour your father and your mother’, and ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’” - Matt. 19:18-19

Jesus was being asked what good things must be done to have eternal life. He responded with some of the Ten Commandments. The young man who was asking the question replied that he had done all of these things since his childhood, which was highly commendable. Then Jesus tells him to sell what he has and give it to the poor so that he would have riches in heaven.

That, of course, was not what the young man wanted to hear because his love for riches was overwhelming and a hindrance to his spiritual life and having eternal life.

If you are seeking eternal life today what would hinder you from receiving this wonderful gift? You and I cannot do anything to please God and obtain favour from Him. Jesus accomplished all this, which was necessary to redeem us out of the hands of the devil.

It is not by any work on our own part, for by grace we are saved through faith and that not of ourselves but it is a gift from God. We simply trust Him and receive what He has provided for us by faith. When we have received a new nature (His nature) it will not be difficult to keep his commandments and walk in obedience to His word.

Dear God and Father thank You for Your word today, that it is a light to my path. Help me not to hold the material things of this world too close to me but to wear them as a loose coat, always ready to give to those in need and lay up treasures in heaven.
