“Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but in the beginning it was not so. And I say to you whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
- Matthew 19:8-9
Jesus speaks about divorce, which is a rapidly growing dilemma in our society today. Married people get divorced and this can be for many reasons, some of which may sound very valid. In the times of Moses couples divorced sometimes for petty and ridiculous reasons. Jesus, however, says that divorce happens because of a heart condition, called “hardness of heart”.
Somehow love has departed from the heart and callousness sets in and hearts become hardened. This never happens suddenly but over a period of time the tenderness of devotion and love which filled the hearts of two people, dissipates and one or both partners fall out of love.
When those who are married contemplate separation or divorce, the condition of the heart must be examined. For the heart to be in love and tender towards the spouse it must be tender towards God. Hardness of God towards a partner in marriage indicates hardness towards God.
Make sure that your heart is right with God that you are tender and pliable towards Him and then the heart will also be soft towards your spouse and your fellow human beings. Examine your heart before God today. Is it hard or tender, unbending and unyielding?
Dear God and Father thank You for the convicting power of the Holy Spirit and that Your desire is for me to live in perfect harmony with others. Remove from me callousness and hardness of heart to live in obedience to Your word in Jesus name.
