“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” - Matthew 7:15
Jesus sounds a warning against those who portray gentleness and come with what seems to be the Word of the Lord. Outwardly, they seem to be genuine and authentic, but be careful. Do the words that they speak line up with the written Word of God? Does it confirm what you already know by the Holy Spirit within you? Does the person’s life line up with the revealed will of God in the Bible?
What is he or she like as a person? What is the so-called prophet’s marriage like? What is the person’s general behaviour like? What is their attitude towards money like? This is not being judgmental, but being cautious that you do not contaminate your faith with the wrong teachings.
These are important questions to ask. A wolf is a ravenous animal compared to a sheep. The outward can be deceptive. It is the content and intent of the heart that must be taken care of and the guiding factor. Otherwise there is the danger of harm and destruction.
Dear Father, thank You for Your word of truth; You have said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” I choose today to live in the full counsel of Your word; help me to flesh it out in my life today. Help me to discern the truth from falsehood, in the name of the Lord Jesus.
