“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:41-42
Jesus noticed the difference in two sisters when visiting their home. Martha was the one who concerned herself with things in the home and busied herself with the task of serving others. She felt it was important, to make sure that visitors were provided for, serving with particular concern and detail, seeing that the house was neat and tidy, endeavouring to help provide for the material needs of others.
From the time Jesus came into the house she was concerned about what was necessary to make Him feel at home and comfortable. While she was busy with what she believed was important, preparing drink and food, Mary, her sister, was calmly sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to Him and receiving spiritual food and drink.
Martha became upset because her sister was not helping her in the tasks that she felt were important in serving the Lord Jesus. Mary had chosen what Jesus described as being “that good part which shall not be taken away from her”. She was receiving from Jesus spiritual sustenance, feeding her spirit - which is eternal.
Martha was concerned about those things that are material and ultimately will pass away, not that what she was doing was not important, but Jesus was teaching us about priorities in life.
Don’t worry and be so concerned with the material things of life that you lose sight of the importance of spending time in prayer and meditation in His word. Is this the one thing needed in your life today, to spend time in His presence at His feet? Your business and involvement in many things may be important, but this one thing cannot be neglected.
Today dear Father, in the name of the Lord Jesus, I ask You to help me not to be so concerned about things in life that I neglect the important spiritual things like reading Your word and spending time in prayer.
