“But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore, do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” - Matthew 6:7-8
They spin their prayer wheels; recite words and phrases repeatedly, hoping God will hear them. Like the prophets of Baal, in the days of Elijah, “Oh Baal, hear us,” even cutting themselves, but there is no response.
An altar of stone had been built, complete with a sacrifice, but Baal did not respond. Vainly repeating their prayer all day he does not hear.
Elijah, after making the task even more difficult by soaking the altar in water, just prays a few words and the sacrifice and altar is consumed with fire.
How often do we pray with many words and in such a way as to impress others and be noticed by them? Rather go into the privacy of your room and pray. It is a secret place with your Father God. He sees the attitude of your heart and all things secret He hears and rewards openly.
Dear Father, show me my heart like it really is. I know that nothing is hidden from You. I purpose today not to be a professor of the faith but by Your help, I want my life to be an expression of Your love and grace. Forgive me of all hypocrisy and sham.
