Going the Second Mile

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I tell you, not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.” - Matthew 5:38-42

To retaliate in the same way as you are badly dealt with, and to get even, is often a temptation. Remember, that you will be treated no differently as a believer than Christ was treated.

We do not try to vindicate ourselves or seek revenge when attacked, but trust the Lord who says, “Vengeance is mine and I will repay.” Always endeavour to do good, not expecting anything in return.

Lewis B Smedes, American theologian and author said: “You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well.”

Dear Father in heaven You are worthy of honour and thanksgiving. I throw myself upon You today. I ask You to bless those who despitefully use me. I ask that you will manifest Your love to those who are unsaved and may they come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Help me today to walk in love towards everyone.
