Simple Kindness

“So which of these three do you think was neighbour to him…Go and do likewise.”

– Luke 10:36, 37.

No action of ours, whether good or bad, goes unnoticed. God sees all and Jesus says that even the simplest act of kindness like giving a glass of water is a gesture that pleases heaven. In our busy days, of looking after a family, working hard to make a living, it is easy to neglect doing good when the opportunity arises. We are either too tired or too busy or we just don’t want to be bothered.

A story is told of an elderly African American woman standing in the rain on the side of a highway. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a lift.

A young white man stopped to help her, something unheard of in the deep southern states of America during the Sixties. The man took her to safety and assisted her in getting a taxi.

Despite her obvious hurry she noted the young man’s address before driving off.  Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console colour TV was delivered with a note attached.

It read:   "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Mrs Nat King Cole.

She was the wife of one of America’s great singers Nat King Cole and a simple act of kindness had eased, in some small way, the pain of death and grief.  You may never know how your gestures of goodwill and kindness will bless others.

Dear Father in heaven, thank You for all the blessings that You bestow on me. Help me today to be a blessing to others by word or in deed so that Jesus may be lifted up
