“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs, from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.” - Luke. 6:43
Jesus underlines a simple well known fact, that fruit trees are known by the fruit they bear. An apple tree will produce apples and pear tree pears. A good tree will produce fruit that is good and delicious.
Jesus uses this illustration to bring home to us the fact that we are expected to bear fruit and that it should be good fruit and not bad. Jesus is encouraging us to live consistent Christian lives.
Paul, the apostle, declares in Galatians 5:22, 23 that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
When our spirits have been regenerated and we have been born again, these wonderful fruits will begin to manifest. The quality and the amount of fruit we produce dependents on our relationship with the Lord.
Jesus is looking for fruit today, not as mere profession, where there is nothing but leaves. A fruit tree with pretty leaves is a fake. There are Christians who fake their behaviour without ever bearing the fruit of the spirit.
For example are you loving, kind and longsuffering in the privacy of your home? Your behaviour, whether in private or in public, should be consistently the same.
Dear Father in the name of the Lord Jesus, manifest Your nature through me today, and may the fruit of my life glorify You and draw others to You.
