“One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” - Mark 10:21
What are you lacking today? The young man, in the natural, seemed to be lacking nothing, having great possessions. Although he was rich he was searching for the true meaning to life. He had come running to Jesus and asked how he could have eternal life.
Jesus told him to keep the commandments, which he said he had kept from his youth. Then Jesus challenged him about his wealth. Sell it all, said Jesus, and then he would have treasure in heaven.
But this was too much for the rich young man. He probably reasoned: ’How can I afford to give up all this wealth?’ It had hold of him instead of him having hold of it. His security was in his possessions and it was difficult for him to let go of them and follow the Lord Jesus.
To possess eternal life far outweighs any earthly possession. How foolish it is to place greater value upon earthly things than upon eternal life.
We cannot take any material thing with us when we die, everything of material value will be left behind, so why set our hearts on them? The young man did not realise that he would receive much more here and in the life to come if he had been obedient to Jesus.
Dear God and Father, thank You once again for reminding me that material things, regardless of their worth, are of no value, compared to eternal life. Help me to control money and never allow it to control me, in Jesus name
