“Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
- Matthew 26:10-13
The disciples of Jesus were critical of a woman who brought an alabaster flask of costly fragrant oil and poured it out on the Lord Jesus. They felt this was a waste because it could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor.
Jesus, however, says that this was done for His burial which would occur later, something that the disciples had not yet grasped. They saw it as waste, but Jesus was teaching them something pertaining to the future preaching of the gospel.
When we give to propagate the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ people often will say it is such a waste, but to God it is a fragrant and a lasting memorial. Remember that you are giving to God and he sees the sacrifice that you may have made to give and it stands as a lasting memorial.
There will be people in heaven who were converted to Christ because of your giving. Money cannot be taken with you when you die. It all stays behind. But money used for the extension of the kingdom of God will result in souls being plucked out of the jaws of hell and placed in the kingdom of God.
Like the story of the anointing of Jesus your faithfulness in pouring out something costly upon Him, like time, money and love will be your treasure in heaven.
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of giving to the cause nearest to Your heart, to save the lost. May my gifts to extend Your kingdom be a sweet smelling aroma and a lasting memorial, in the name of the Lord Jesus
