“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” - Matthew 5:27-28
Jesus lifts the standard much higher than what the law had required, from committing an act to merely looking. One is an act, punishable by the law, the other a desire of the heart. The heart is the centre of your thinking, your will, and your emotions.
One is a lust of the flesh and the other a lust of the heart. One is a sin of the flesh and the other a sin of the spirit.
Healing evangelist A. A. Allen said: “Before one can walk as Christ walked, and talk as He talked, he must first begin to think as Christ thought.”
It is vital that we discipline ourselves by the power and authority of the word of God by renewing our minds by the word of God and letting His word abide in us and guard ourselves against sins of the spirit.
Master, You who know the very intent of our hearts, our desires and emotions I surrender my will, my emotions to You and I know You will help me to apply my mind to that which is upright, pure and good, in all I do today. Please help me as I dwell in Your word.
