Friendship with Jesus

“You are My friends if you do whatever I command you”. - John 15:14

In the early days of my walk with the Lord, there was a song that was very popular in the church. We sang it often, reminding us of the friendship with Jesus. These were the words:

“Friendship with Jesus, fellowship divine, O! What blessed sweet communion Jesus is a friend of mine.”

Jesus is a friend and we are His friends if we do whatever He commands us to do. Proverbs 18:24, declares that He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Further Proverbs 17:17 says, “That friends love at all times.”

Friends are helpful and are always there when there is a crisis or a special need. To be a friend of the Lord Jesus involves doing what He commanded. It is more than giving lip service. It is being a doer.

Jesus asked on one occasion “Why call me Lord and you do not the things I commanded”. He has commanded us to watch and pray, He has commanded us to go into the entire world and preach the gospel and to cast out devils and lay hands on the sick.

The demonstration of our love for Him is that we will keep and do His commandments.   This will mean we are His friends.  I want to be known as a friend of the Lord Jesus, a child of God, an heir of God, and a joint heir with the Lord Jesus.

Today resolve and purpose with all your heart that you will not only be a hearer of His word but a fervent doer of His word, obeying His every command.

Dear Lord Jesus, I love You and desire to please You in all that I say and do. I know You will help me to be a doer of Your word and not merely a hearer.
