“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” …“Feed My lambs.” “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” …“Tend My sheep.” Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” …“Feed My sheep”. - John 21:15-17
Simon Peter had decided to go back to his trade of fishing after Jesus had died. Then the resurrected Jesus appears on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Peter recognises Jesus, plunges into the water and swims to Him. The other disciples bring the boat to shore full of large fishes.
Then Jesus asks Peter, some heart-searching questions, “Do you love Me more than these? “ Do you love Me more than earthly possessions, more than your business, more than any material thing? Peter’s response is “Lord you know that I love You,"
In the original Greek, Jesus asked if Peter loved Him with love that is deeper than merely being fond of Him. Peter’s response merely expressed a fondness for Jesus until finally, after the third question; his reply was one of love that was a divine quality with which he loved Him.
When Jesus first called Peter to follow Him he said, “Come, follow Me and I will make you a fisher of men.” He, along with John, were called to fish for men, to a ministry of evangelism.
Now, after the resurrection of Jesus, Peter will not only be a fisherman reaching out to win people to Jesus Christ but also a shepherd to establish people in His church by taking care of the lambs, tending and feeding the sheep.
The question posed again today, is do I really love the Lord Jesus more than anything else in this world? Decide today that you will not let anything stand in your way regarding your love for Him.
Dear Lord Jesus, today I declare my love for You; I love You with all my heart, my mind, and my strength and will do all You require of me in the building of Your church. Help me to reach out to the little children and people everywhere and witness to them about your free salvation.
