“If you love Me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” - John 14:15-18
Here is another wonderful example of the love and care that God has for those who love Him. Jesus was about to leave his disciples and return to heaven and He assures them they will not be orphaned.
Despite all the excitement of the resurrection of Christ, there must still have been some sadness that Jesus was leaving them. But His promise was to give them a Helper, until He came back to earth.
Every student of the Bible knows that the Holy Spirit during the Old Testament dispensation only came upon people for special occasions. The Holy Spirit came upon individuals and they prophesied, or He came upon others and they were enabled to do exquisite work with their hands and in the case of others, like King Solomon, displayed amazing wisdom. Then there was Samson, who had phenomenal strength, when the Holy Spirit came upon Him.
This changed dramatically on the day of Pentecost. The Helper, the Holy Spirit, came upon everybody in that Upper Room and ever since that day He has been empowering, comforting and helping all who accept Jesus as their Saviour and Lord.
No longer would the Holy Spirit come upon only a select few, but He is now the dynamic Person who anoints all Jesus’ followers for service.
Thank You dear Father God for the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Thank You that He is my helper, guide and comforter. I yield myself to Him to be an instrument through which He can flow to fulfil Your will through me, in Jesus name.
