“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” - Luke 10:20
The disciples had just returned from a triumphant mission, preaching and healing and casting out demons. They had done what they had seen Jesus do and were amazed at the authority they had, even over evil spirits.
This kind of ministry was not exercised in Old Testament times and the casting out of demons was virtually unknown until Jesus did it in His ministry. The disciple’s joy was only natural to have been able to see people delivered from years of demonic torment and sickness.
Jesus, after listening to their exciting reports, cautions them and brings their attention that the greatest joy should be the fact that their names are written in heaven. This should be something that we never take lightly and should be forever grateful for.
It is important to have the assurance in your heart that your name is written in heaven, however wonderful it is to cast out devils, and to see the miraculous flow and power of the Holy Spirit in operation.
Some will say on that day when we stand in His presence, “Lord I cast out devils in your name”, and the Lord will say, “I never knew you”. The point is that it is not how great our ministry is, but is your name written in heaven?
Dear Lord Jesus I surrender myself totally to You today and by Your grace I will serve You with all my heart. Thank You for the witness within my spirit by the Holy Spirit that I am Your child. Thank you that my name is written in heaven.
