The Finger of God

“If I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

- Luke 11:20

Jesus said that the act of casting out demons was by the “finger of God”.  By the finger of God He was referring to the person of the Holy Spirit and, that when this happens, the kingdom of God has come upon the individual. The ministry of Jesus in casting out demons was a demonstration of the kingdom of God.

Jesus, on one occasion, and it was the only occasion that He wrote something – did so with His finger in the sand. The Pharisees were prosecuting a woman who was caught in the act of adultery, and were ready to stone her.

Jesus stoops down and writes with His finger in the sand. He did this twice. We do not know what He wrote, but we can speculate. That it was perhaps the reference to the commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery”. The second time he wrote, He may have written names of the woman the Pharisee had committed adultery with, because Jesus said, “you who are without sin cast the first stone”.

They left Him one by one. The Holy Spirit is a finger of revelation.

Balthazar was the king in Babylon, who defied God. While he was banqueting he lifted a golden chalice, which was taken from the temple in Israel and as he prepared to sip the wine a strange thing happened. A hand appeared and with a finger wrote the judgement of God upon Babylon. Balthazar’s knees shook, and he trembled under great conviction.

The Holy Spirit is a convicting finger.   He convicts us of righteousness and judgement. Purpose today to always be sensitive to the promptings, revelations and conviction of the Holy Spirit and rely on Him to be your Guide.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for this day and all the opportunities I have in it to serve You. Help me to be totally reliant on the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me, in Jesus’ name.
