How To Receive

“If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?   Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.”

- Luke 11:11-13

Jesus portrays the natural so that we can understand the spiritual. No human father would give his child a stone to eat. He will give him something real to eat, even if it is the last crust of bread in the pantry.

Therefore, even in a sin-stained society God says we recognise what is the right and correct thing to do. We won’t give someone something harmful.

Therefore, Jesus says that we cannot expect something bad when asking our heavenly Father for those things that are beneficial to us. The Holy Spirit is a gift that our heavenly Father desires to give us.

Some Christians, because they have heard of some weird things about the Holy Spirit, shy away from receiving this gift. But it is of great value to those who are His children, but it has to be asked for.

Jesus promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to be our Comforter and Guide. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force, but a divine person, who will come and live in us. He will make Jesus very real. He will make the Bible come alive to you. He will lead you. He will teach you and be your helper and comforter.

He is vitally necessary in your life – without Him you will fail in your Christian walk.  His power is very necessary so that you can overcome the wiles of the devil.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for being a Father who is infinite in wisdom, and love. I know You will not give me anything bad or detrimental to my well-being. Thank You for the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit.
